The Power of Volunteerism: The Heart Behind Our Work

April is National Volunteer Month, the perfect time to recognize the people who make our mission possible every single day. At United Way of Lake County, volunteers aren’t just helpful; they are the backbone of our work.

Behind every successful fundraiser, every event, and every program that reaches families in need, dedicated volunteers are making it happen. They help us prepare for initiatives and events, stuff envelopes for important mailings, serve as board members, committee members, Emerging Leaders, and Women United members, sort and distribute food, take part in our annual Day of Caring, organize donated clothing for our community’s Back-to-School Bash, and roll up their sleeves to set up and run the free clothing store at that event for hundreds of local families. And that’s just the beginning. Simply put, we could not do this work without them.

But volunteerism isn’t just about what it does for organizations like ours; it’s also incredibly powerful for the people who give their time. Volunteering creates a sense of purpose and connection. It brings people together, builds relationships, and offers a meaningful way to make a tangible difference in your own community. Many volunteers tell us they walk away feeling energized, fulfilled, and inspired, knowing they played a part in something bigger than themselves.

There’s also real, lasting value in giving back. Volunteering can reduce stress, boost mental well-being, and even strengthen professional skills. Whether it is teamwork, leadership, or simply seeing challenges from a new perspective, the experience leaves a lasting impact.

At its core, volunteerism is about community. It is neighbors helping neighbors. It is compassion in action. And it is a reminder that small acts, when multiplied, can create powerful change.

This National Volunteer Month, we celebrate every individual who has given their time, energy, and heart to support our work. You are the reason we can continue to serve Lake County’s most vulnerable residents, and we are endlessly grateful.
