Young Leaders of United Way of Lake County Award $15,218 in Grants August 31, 2018 at 5th Annual Golf Outing Fundraiser

Mentor, OH (August 31, 2018) - The Young Leaders of United Way of Lake County awarded $15,218 in grants this morning during their 5th Annual Golf Outing Fundraiser at Black Brook in Mentor.

The mission of the Young Leaders is to positively impact the lives of children in Lake County through improved health and education. They work toward this, in part, via the support of 501(c)(3) and nonprofit organizations in Lake County with grants that promote a similar mission geared toward youth.

A total of twenty-one grant applications were received.

Funds totaling $15,218 were awarded to 7 non-profit agencies and organizations whose programs directly impact the lives of children and youth in Lake County. Recipients included:

  • Alliance for Working Together: Junior Botz Program - $1,250
  • Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio: Journey Program - $1,100
  • Hospice of the Western Reserve: Grief Resources Program for Children - $1,000
  • Lake County Free Clinic:  Helping Children Breathe Better - $2,593
  • National Alliance on Mental Illness (Lake County):  Ending the Silence - $2,000
  • Salvation Army Citadel: Steam Program - $2,275
  • Youth United Way: Grant Award Allocation Program - $5,000

Representatives from each agency were on-hand to accept the grants.

“We are thrilled to be able to impact our community’s youth in such a big way and are honored to serve our community. It’s the driving force behind our purpose and the reason our members feel so strongly about their involvement in our program,” said Andrew Phelps, chair of Young Leaders of United Way of Lake County. “Our community is lucky to have so many dedicated agencies, people and programs to serve our children and youth.”

This is the Young Leader’s third grant funding cycle, which began in 2016. Since this time, they have awarded nearly $45,000 in grants, which includes this year’s distribution, and the allocations they have awarded to United Way of Lake County’s Youth United Way program for their grant distribution process.

The group was established in 2014 by a core group of United Way volunteers. Their purpose includes engaging, empowering, mentoring and supporting the youth of Lake County in the achievement of their goals and is accomplished through the group’s philanthropic efforts of giving, advocating and volunteering.

The Young Leaders of United Way of Lake County raises donations in support of their grant program primarily through their annual golf outing.

According to Jodi Matsko, United Way of Lake County Resource Development Manager and Young Leaders’ staff lead, “Today’s fifth annual golf outing fundraiser was sold out and raised nearly $20,000  to benefit the children and youth of Lake County. A record 144 golfers participated, representing 36 foursomes.”
