United Way of Lake County Helps Bring Healthy Food Access to Painesville Farmers Market Through New Community Partnership

June 16, 2025 – Mentor, OH – United Way of Lake County (UWLC) has partnered with the Lake County General Health District and the City of Painesville to make it possible for shoppers at the Painesville Farmers Market to use their SNAP benefits to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, bread, and meat from local enlisted vendors.

Each week, UWLC will be on-site at the Farmers Market to facilitate the process. Shoppers who wish to make purchases with their SNAP benefits must stop by the UWLC branded tent, located near the Civil War monument in Veteran’s Park, to purchase tokens in two-dollar increments.

The Painesville Farmers Market takes place every Thursday through September 18, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Painesville’s Veterans Park. Please note: there will be no market on June 19 or July 17.

This effort is made possible through a Creating Healthy Communities grant secured by the Lake County General Health District from the Ohio Department of Health. The five-year grant is focused on preventing chronic disease by increasing access to healthy foods and encouraging active living.

“Our partnership with the Lake County General Health District and the City of Painesville is a meaningful step toward improving local health outcomes by making nutritious food more accessible for families in need, said Dione DeMitro, President & CEO of United Way of Lake County.

This is just one of many initiatives UWLC takes on to directly support Lake County residents in need. Whether its helping families avoid hunger through their Feed Lake County food drive and fundraiser, operating a year-round pantry where local food banks can shop for essential items, or collecting and distributing clothing for children at Lake County’s Back-to-School Bash, these are just a few of the ways UWLC steps in to help. Aside from the many critical nonprofit programs they fund, these are hands-on initiatives that make an immediate and visible impact in the community.
