Meet Mark Sutherland, United Way of Lake County's 2017 Campaign Chair

Mark Sutherland is corporate vice president of global communications and public affairs for The Lubrizol Corporation and also serves as president of The Lubrizol Foundation. In these roles, he leads Lubrizol’s employee and corporate communications, community engagement, government relations and the philanthropic initiatives for the corporation and its foundation.

"From my first job out of college in 1976 to today, I've spent my career working in Lake County. It's a wonderful community with a rich tradition of support. And like many of us, I've benefited from the hard work and strong contribution of many who came before me. Because of this, it's only natural for me to want to give back - to pay it forward. I am thrilled to chair United Way of Lake County's 2017 campaign and look forward to impacting the community," said Mark Sutherland. "I'm excited to advocate for United Way and to broaden support for them and the lives they impact throughout the community," he said.

Having initially joined Lubrizol in 1981, Mr. Sutherland has had a variety of assignments in marketing, business management and sales management in multiple product areas and business divisions. In 2006, Mr. Sutherland was appointed to director of investor relations, where he led the company’s communication efforts with institutional investors. After the completion of the company’s 2011 acquisition by Berkshire Hathaway, Mr. Sutherland joined W.R. Grace & Co. where he served as vice president of investor relations until rejoining Lubrizol in August 2014.

Mark currently serves the community as a board member with the Cleveland Leadership Center and University Circle, Inc.  He also previously served on the boards of the Great Lakes Science Center and the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio.

"United Way of Lake County is a well-equipped agency to direct resources to agencies and programs that provide high returns to the community by measuring impact and ensuring accountability," siad Sutherland. "It's the best way to help the most people."

When it comes to giving, Mark relates to Warren Buffet's analogy on "The Lottery of Birth:"

  • Twenty-four hours before your birth, a genie appears and advises that you get to set the rules for the world.

  • Here’s the catch:  You get to pick one ball out of 7 billion.  The ball will determine your gender, race, ethnicity, natural abilities and health.

  • Buffett’s lesson:  Let’s work hard to shape a society that does not leave someone behind simply because they picked the wrong ball. This is  where United Way of Lake County makes a difference.

Mr. Sutherland holds a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from the College of Wooster and attended Sophia University in Tokyo. He received his Master’s in Business Administration from the Weatherhead School of Management of Case Western Reserve University.

Mark and his wife, Annette, claim to live vicariously through the escapades of their three college-aged daughters.
