United Way of Lake County distributed more than 20,000 pounds of food to more than 50 local food pantries on Friday as part of the nonprofit organization's Feed Lake County food drive campaign.
Feed Lake County also raised $41,728 in monetary donations, which will be used throughout the year to make food purchases for the local pantries.
Feed Lake County kicked off in the beginning of March. More than 100 businesses, organizations and schools helped conduct food drives for the campaign.
The need for food in Lake County continues to grow as 2-1-1 reported more than 10,000 calls for food in 2014, which was an increase from 8,342 calls for food in 2013. One in every six residents in Lake County struggles with hunger.
Volunteers from Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers helped United Way with Friday's food distribution, which is set to serve nearly 17,000 meals to people in need.
