Mentor, OH (June 23, 2016) -- Nearly 600 volunteers took part in United Way of Lake County’s largest volunteer event during its 24th annual Day of Caring on Wednesday, June 22, 2016. Nearly 40 companies, organizations and groups of families and friends adopted a total of 70 projects to help Lake County nonprofits and residents in need. Volunteers participated in a large variety of projects throughout Lake County including painting, cleaning, weeding, window washing, yard clean up, trimming hedges, pantry food distribution, social activities with our seniors and more.

United Way of Lake County's Day of Caring allows volunteers to see first-hand the work local nonprofits do every day. It’s a few hours of service that is intended to provide a connection that promotes volunteerism throughout the year. Bringing community together to impact lives is United Way's role. United Way of Lake County's Director of Marketing and Communications, Tami Lewis said, "Day of Caring is a snapshot of what we do all year long – galvanizing people around solutions to build stronger communities."

The idea behind Day of Caring is to connect volunteers with opportunities to advance community solutions. Volunteers assisted Lake County nonprofits and their clients with limited resources, in completing projects that would otherwise go undone. Non-profit organizations submitted projects for consideration and United Way connected these projects with groups and organizations willing to adopt them by volunteering labor and skills.

Sponsors included Fifth Third Bank, Fredon Corporation and Winter Equipment.

"Most of our volunteers came from local businesses who support volunteer engagement and made it possible for thier employees to participate. A total of 200 volunteers came from Avery Dennison alone," said Lewis.

The day began with a Pancake Breakfast at 7:30 am that was generously hosted by Lakeland Community College in Breakers Dining Hall. Perkins Family Restaurant in Painesville kindly donated the pancakes, Giant Eagle in Willoughby donated the sausage, McDonalds in Mentor donated apple juice and Giant Eagle in Mentor donated bottled water to keep everyone hydrated throughout the day. Following this, projects took place throughout the Lake County communities of Eastlake, Fairport Harbor, Kirtland, Madison, Mentor, Painesville, Perry, Wickliffe, Willoughby and Willoughby Hills.
