12,000 lbs. of Food Donated to Lake County Residents in Time for the Holidays

Over 12,000 pounds of food was distributed which will provide approximately 10,118 meals for Lake County residents in need. The non-perishable food items distributed included peanut butter, jelly, pasta, spaghetti sauce, cereal, apple juice, pancake mix, vegetables, fruit and more.

“Every year the need for food in Lake County continues to grow,” said Tami Lewis, United Way of Lake County’s Director of Marketing and Communications. “Nearly one out of every ten residents of Lake County lives in poverty. Many food pantries have been running out of items and they rely on us to help supplement their supply and fulfill requests.”

In 2011, Lifeline’s 2-1-1 emergency hotline received 3,600 calls for food. Fast forward to today where Lifeline has received over 5,000 calls to-date with a large jump expected over the holiday through the end of 2015.

The United Way of Lake County runs its annual Feed Lake County Food Drive each spring to help feed those in need. Thousands of pounds of food are collected through this effort.  This year’s donations were distributed at the end of April and enough food was collected to provide 203,000 meals for those in need.

Many companies, organizations and schools also ran food drives to collect financial contributions in lieu of food. The money raised from this is used by United Way of Lake County to make purchases for the food pantries to help them  re-stock throughout the year, and today is one of the days we are helping them accomplish this.

United Way of Lake County plans to kick-off its 2016 Feed Lake County Food Drive campaign in March.
